We get a "Stream Read Error" when running AutoRun Wizard, why?

59,675 views - Updated 10-28-2026 - AutoRun Studio FAQ

A "Stream Read Error" usually appears when the starting or closing splash screen is a very large BMP (bitmap) file. Uncompressed BMP files from cameras or high-resolution designs can be tens of megabytes.

The fix

Convert the splash screen to JPEG and make it no larger than it needs to be on screen:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type mspaint and press Enter to open Paint.
  2. Open your BMP file.
  3. If it is larger than the screen, choose Resize and make it smaller (a splash screen is rarely wider than 800 to 1200 pixels).
  4. Choose File > Save as > JPEG picture.
  5. Select the new JPEG as your splash screen in AutoRun Wizard, save and test.

If you use the Transparency option you need a BMP; in that case just make the BMP smaller. Supported splash screen formats are BMP, JPEG, ICO, WMF and EMF.

Try it yourself. AutoRun Studio is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
