Can I use AutoRun Wizard to autorun files on a USB Flash storage drive?

61,075 views - Updated 10-28-2026 - AutoRun Studio FAQ

Yes, AutoRun Wizard works on USB flash drives exactly as it does on a CD: the same three files, the same splash screen, sound, EULA and launch files. What differs is what Windows does when the drive is plugged in.

What Windows does with a USB drive

Windows versionPlugged-in USB drive
Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11Never starts a program by itself, and AutoPlay does not offer "Run autorun.exe." Your custom drive icon and name from autorun.inf are still shown in File Explorer.
Windows XP and Vista (older updates)Could offer to run the program. Microsoft removed this in a 2011 security update after USB viruses spread this way.

No autorun product can change this; it is how Windows protects every PC from infected USB drives. Your users start your project by opening the drive and double-clicking autorun.exe, and from there everything runs just as you configured it.

Set up the drive

  1. Build and test your project in AutoRun Wizard as usual.
  2. Copy the contents of your Base Folder (not the folder itself) to the root of the USB drive. These must be at the root, for example E:\autorun.inf:
    • autorun.inf
    • autorun.exe
    • autorun.dat
plus every other file and folder from the Base Folder.
  3. Safely remove the drive, plug it back in, and check that File Explorer shows your icon and drive name.
  4. Double-click autorun.exe on the drive to confirm your project starts.

Make it easy for your users

  • Give the drive a custom icon and name so it stands out in File Explorer.
  • Print "Open the drive and double-click autorun.exe" on the drive, its card or packaging.
  • Keep the root of the drive tidy: only the autorun files, your launch file and a few folders, so autorun.exe is easy to find.
  • If you need a prompt on insert, ship a CD or DVD; see Windows 10 and 11 behavior for discs.

Some antivirus tools delete autorun.inf from USB drives. If your icon disappears, see antivirus and autorun files.

Try it yourself. AutoRun Studio is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
