I autorun an HTML file and it does not do anything, what is wrong?

60,689 views - Updated 10-28-2026 - AutoRun Studio FAQ

When you autorun an HTML file without a browser option, Windows opens it with whatever program is associated with .html on that PC. Usually that is the default browser, but some PCs have .html files set to open in an HTML editor, a text editor, or nothing at all.

The fix

In the AutoRun File Properties for your HTML file, check Force the file to be opened within the default Internet Browser. AutoRun Wizard then asks Windows for the default web browser and opens your page in it, whatever the .html association is.

Still nothing?

  • Check the file name and location. The file must be in your Base Folder and copied to the disc in the same place. Click Test in AutoRun Wizard first.
  • Check that the CD started at all. On Windows 10 and 11 the user must click the AutoPlay prompt; see Windows 10 and 11 behavior.
  • Internet Explorer option. If your project forces Internet Explorer, the page opens in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and 11 because Internet Explorer is retired. Switch to the default browser option.
  • Look for an Edge or browser prompt behind other windows, such as a download or "open this file" question.
Try it yourself. AutoRun Studio is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
