What if there is no association to my file extension?
If the PC has no program associated with your file's extension, Windows cannot open the file. Depending on the Windows version it does nothing or asks the user "How do you want to open this file?"
There are three ways to make sure your file always opens:
- Choose a file type every PC can open. PDF, MP4, HTML, JPEG and PNG open on every Windows 10 and 11 PC with no extra software.
- Force the default browser. For HTML, PDF and image files, check Force the file to be opened within the default Internet Browser in the AutoRun File Properties.
- Launch the program yourself. Set the File to Autorun to the program that opens your file (on the disc or on the user's PC) and pass your file on the Command Line. See opening a file with a program on the CD.
Try it yourself. AutoRun Studio is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
