How can I close the KIOSK window?

61,172 views - Updated 10-28-2026 - AutoRun Studio FAQ

A full-screen kiosk window has no title bar and no close button, so always give the user a way out.

Alt+F4 always works

Pressing Alt+F4 closes the kiosk window in Microsoft Edge, Chrome and the old Internet Explorer. Say so on your menu page, for example "Press Alt+F4 to exit."

A Close link on the page

Add a link that runs JavaScript to close the window:

<a href="javascript:window.close()">Close</a>

Modern browsers only let a page close its own window while it is the first and only page in that window. So the link works on your opening menu page, but after the user clicks through to another page the browser ignores it. Put the Close link on the first page, and the Alt+F4 hint on every page.

On Windows 10 and 11, see opening your menu full screen in Microsoft Edge, and adding a menu for building the HTML.

Try it yourself. AutoRun Studio is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
